The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) define a "standard drink" as a drink that contains 10 grams of pure alcohol. A standard drink is a unit of measurement. One standard drink measures the particular amount of alcohol consumed. A standard drink always has the same alcohol content regardless of its size or alcohol type. The number of standard drinks in alcohol beverages is always shown on the label of the container. At bars and pubs where beverages may not be labelled the number of standard drinks in a particular beverage can vary from venue to venue.
